History:
The BTR-70 was first shown in
public during a military parade in Moscow in 1980. It replaced
the BTR-60P in the russian army. While both vehicles have the
same turret armament, the BTR-70 has two upgraded 8-cylinder 120-hp
gasoline engines. Other modifications are the vision improvement
for the troops, additional firing ports and an improved armor
protection. The BTR-70 has a longer hull and a large gap between
the front and rear sets of road wheels. Triangular-shaped doors
are located in this space on both sides of the vehicle and give
the troops access to the hull of the vehicle. A wave deflector
is mounted on the front. The troop compartment gives cover to
six infantry men which are seated facing out while each seat has
a firing port and a vision block. As with the BRDM-2, the BTR-70
has a small conical turret with a 14.5-mm KPT machine gun and
a coaxial 7.62-mm PKT machinegun. The BTR-70 is fully amphibious
and is propelled in water by a single water-jet at the rear of
the hull. The BTR-70 has good cross-country capability, high road
speed, and large troop-carrying capacity. Its versatility and
amphibious capability gives it a wide field of service. The big
disadvantage is its relatively light armor protection. On later
models the bow section was upgraded and some special layered armor
was added. The BTR-70 is equipped with an NBC protection system
and an automatic fire detection/suppression system.
