History:
The Avenger Stinger system is a lightweight, mobile and transportable surface-to-air missile system which is mounted on a Heavy High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). Avenger is designed to counter hostile cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and low-flying, high-speed aircraft and helicopters. It is a short-range air defense system which is totally automated, can shoot-on-the-move, and is day-and-night capable in all weather conditions. The Avenger weapon system includes a 360°, rotating turret which is mounted on a heavy HMMWV chassis with an upgraded suspension. The Avenger is operated by a two-man crew. The gunner operates from inside the turret, and the driver operates from the driver's compartment. The gunner’s turret has missile pods mounted on each side. Each missile pod can hold four missiles that also can be removed and fired by the crew from the shoulder position. The rotation of the turret and the elevation of the launcher is accomplished by electric motors. These are powered by batteries which are carried in the base of the weapons system. The .50 caliber machine gun gives the crew additional self-protection. The Avenger weapons system has a 360° field of fire and can engage targets at elevations between -10° and +70°. The gunner has good visibility out of the turret for visual target acquisition, tracking, and engagement. The turret drive is gyro-stabilized and will automatically maintain the missile pod aiming direction regardless of the vehicle motion. Once the target is acquired, the firing sequence is completely automated. The gunner only has to push the fire button to initiate the fire sequence and immediately select and prepare the next missile for firing. This system enables Avenger to launch missiles accurately and gives it a rapid firing sequence. Avenger was deployed during Operation Desert Storm and in the Balkans. The Avenger is manufactured by Boeing in Huntsville.
