History:
The development of the Type 89 Infantry Fighting Vehicle of the JGSDF (Japanese Ground Self Defense Force) started in 1980. In 1984 the first two prototypes were manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry and the JGSDF officially adopted the Type 89 ICV in 1988. The turret is fitted with an Elikon KDE 35 mm machine cannon and a 7.62mm machine gun . There is a launcher for anti-ship and anti-tank guided missiles on either side of the turret. These Type 79 missiles have a range of up to 4 km. The Type 89 IFV has six spherical portholes on both sides and at the rear of its hull, making it possible for the 7 mounted soldiers to fire from inside the vehicle.
