AH-64D Apache Longbow
History:

The AH-64 Apache is the US Army's primary attack helicopter. The Apache is a twin-engined helicopter and was developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). It entered service with the US Army in 1984. The AH-64D Longbow has been deployed by the US Army in Afghanistan as part of Operation Anaconda and with Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. The AH-64D is a day/night all-weather weapon system. It has a tandem-seated crew consisting of the pilot, located in the rear cockpit position and the copilot/gunner in the front position. The Apache has four weapons pylons, two on either side of the aircraft, on which weapons or external fuel tanks can be mounted. The principal mission of the Apache is the destruction of high-value targets with the Hellfire missile. The Apache can carry up to 16 Hellfire laser designated missiles. With a range of over 8000 meters, the Hellfire is used primarily for the destruction of tanks, armored vehicles and other hard material targets. The Apache can also be fitted with 76 rockets (2.75 inch) for use against enemy personnel, light armor vehicles and other soft-skinned targets. A 30mm automatic Boeing M230 chain gun is located under the fuselage. It provides a rate of fire of 625 rounds per minute. The helicopter can carry up to 1,200 rounds of ammunition. In the close support role, the helicopter carries 16 Hellfire missiles on four four-rail launchers and 4 air-to-air missiles. The Apache has a full range of aircraft survivability equipment and has the ability to withstand hits from rounds up to 23 mm in critical areas. The Apache AH-64D is equipped with two General Electric T700-GE-701 turboshaft engines, each providing 1,409kW. The Russian Mi-24 HIND is the Apache's closest counterpart.
